Someone asked me if I believe in New Years resolutions...

I think it's easy to 'bash' them.
Often they are empty goals or promises we make to ourselves with no real intention or gumption to follow through...
Famously January 17th is the day most people sack them off according to reports...
They're also commonly fuelled by the shame and guilt of Christmas consumption, conditioned by diet culture and as any of you who follow me should know by now trying to change from a place of shame or negativity isn't going to serve you in the long run...
"Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change." Brene Brown
And that's the thing isn't it...
If we're resolving to get healthier or start an exercise regime or to lose weight...
and we don't actually believe we are capable...
or we don't actually believe we are the type of person who does those things...
or there is a little neg voice in the back of our minds that says "you're not going to do that"...
It's going to make it very difficult.
And you probably will fail.
Soz.
So how do you succeed?
What? How? Why?
What do you want to achieve?
I want to spend less time on my phone this year.
How am I going to do that? (without the how it's just an empty wish)
I'm going to put it on flight mode every evening at 8pm, leave it downstairs over night and not switch it back on until 9am the next morning.
(Side note: Is this realistic? For me - yes this is. But if I tried to cut down to an hour a day from where I'm at now - no it wouldn't be.
If you currently don't exercise and you say you're going to go to the gym every day that's probably not realistic either.)
Why do I want to do this? (How will it improve my life?)
I don't want to be a slave to capitalism! I want to be more present in my life, improve connection with people around me, spend quality time with my girlfriend and be more conscious in my decisions and actions.
Now I know what I want to achieve, how I'm going to do it and why I'm much more likely to succeed.
This also helps to make sure it aligns with your values and who you are as a person.
If you keep these things in mind with everything you set out to achieve, goals you set and choices you have to make you will be FLYING.
It's hard.
And it's not always fun.
It doesn't sell well on instagram.
But it works.
